It is certainly wrong to assume that non-alignment is near response to cold war. Cold war was by no means the cause of emergence of non-alignment. Non-alignment as a foreign policy is committed to universal problems of peace and freedom. And hence relevance both in cold war period as well as non cold war periods. Its main objective was to protect and preserve newly attained independence and promote economic and political development.
There are challenges like proliferation of weapons of mass destruction cross border terrorism, national disasters and environmental degradation. These factors cause threat to peace and democracy. Non-alignment is relevant as long as there is exploitation, war, destruction, hunger, poverty and disease on earth.
It can protect the economic interest of 3rd world countries by acting against discriminatory trade agreements.
